We have a guy running outside the law on all counts except for killing. That's the one place he draws the line. Why? 'Why don't heroes kill?' is a great question normally, but with this character in particular, it seems completely nonsensical.

I think it's more of a literary device than something that really sticks to a sense of reality.

Everyone basically liberal or conservative for the most part agrees killing is wrong. So a hero you want to relate to everyone and sale more tickets, books etc is created with that mentality. Parents just don't want Johnny watching a hero that might cross the line as they perceive it.

In reality the hero would kill when necessary, or when faced with a mass murderer the Joker for instance would most likely fall to his death accidentally on purpose. The line for which the Batman would be justified to kill the Joker is going to be different for each person so it's easier to just say, heroes never kill.

Depends on context. If you support any war or the death penalty or assisted suicide or putting down an animal for whatever reason then killing is not always wrong.

Batman would probably be more than justified in offing the Joker. There is absolutely no redeeming quality to the guy. Locking him up doesn't work-especially when he wants to be locked up. Rehabilitation doesn't work for guys like these. He's put his faith in the police knowing what the right thing is with this guy. If he can have faith in them doling out the punishment properly, why won't he have faith in working with them the proper way?
