Political Discussion / Politics / President / Bush pushes Congress to allow oil drilling

Ok. I'll answer it 'seriously'.

People blaming ethanol for corn crops being 'wasted' are the same ones crying for cheaper gas. The powers that be had to try something, which is a good case for considering consequences before doing things. I'd have to agree that ethanol sucks just based that it's made from the sugar in corn....the freakin sugar. They basically put water in a ketchup bottle to wring out every drop of ketchup here. They've hopefully learned their lesson and we can move on to something else now.

Rising food prices don't automatically cause famine. This is like the claim that high gas prices cause unemployment. You can make a bridge between the two but you really have to stretch to get there. I could claim that financial education not being taught in public schools is the root cause of both problems, but it's the same very long bridge.

I think I posted enough stuff to knock ethanol down a peg or two. Now let's get to drilling in the mean time.

Now I mentioned this before some dude on CNN had a engine that could run fast and get 110 miles to the gallon. Haven't heard nothing on it since. Americans can do it. I think somebody in the chain is trying to keep prices high on purpose. I'm beginning to think that only individuals should be allowed to add money to campaigns. No corporations. It's not like it would be the end of democracy if powerful corporations couldn't fund elections anymore.  McCain Feingold didn't touch that one or did they? Any experts on that bill or do I have to look it up again.

Agreed.

Individuals can do as much if not more harm having their voice heard above others than any corporation based on their contributions. I think a better solution might be campaigns that don't demand such rediculous amounts of money to carry off. This might deserve a topic of it's own.

Well you might be on to something, but the argument on the other side might be that keeping costs down would be like holding back the candidates from spreading their messages. After all it costs a lot to advertise.

I think to adhere to our basic American philosophy the candidates would have to agree to cut back spending and not take so much from any one individual by themselves.  Having laws to force this is really shaky ground constitutionally.

It used to when you had to rely on radio and TV, and those can be negotiated as well.
