Political Discussion / Politics / Politics and Entertainment / Charlton Heston Passed Away at 84

Charlton Heston died this weekend at age 84. He was one of my favorite actors.

Politically he marched for civil rights in the 60's, and later in life became the President of the American Rifle Association. He was a firm believer in the Constitution and it showed in his actions.

As President of the NRA he delivered a jab at then-President Clinton, saying, "America doesn't trust you with our 21-year-old daughters, and we sure, Lord, don't trust you with our guns."

He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. "The largeness of character that comes across the screen has also been seen throughout his life," President Bush said at the time.

Heston wrote three books: "The Actor's Life; Journals 1956-1976," "Beijing Diary" (1990) and an autobiography, "In the Arena" (1995). He concluded the latter book with an amalgam of quotes from famous Americans, not unlike the amalgam of famous characters that was the actor himself:

"I have a dream. I refuse to accept the end of man. I believe he will endure. He will survive. Man is immortal, not because alone of God's creatures he has a voice, but because he has a soul... a spirit capable of compassion... and sacrifice... and endurance. About America and Americans, this is particularly true. It is a fabulous country, where miracles not only happen, they happen all the time. As a nation, we have, perhaps uniquely, a special willness of the heart."

As Mark Twain said
Quote:
All the great men are dead, and I don't feel so good myself.

I have not heard anything on cause of death, but I hope it wasn't because someone rented I Am Legend for him. Then again, the Planet Of The Apes remake would've put anyone in the original on life support!
R.I.P. Mr. Heston
