When the Supreme Court declared prayer in schools unconstitutional in 1962, Senator Majority Leader Robert Byrd from West Virginia, who was born this day, November 20, 1917, gave a moving address to Congress. He stated: "On the south banks of Washington's Tidal Basin, Thomas Jefferson still speaks: 'God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?'" I used to work with a guy whose parents were deeply involved in West Virginia politics. This guy told me that as a kid, Robert Byrd was a fairly frequent visitor to their home and as a teenager, he had had some pretty significant political discussions with Mr Byrd. He told me that the Robert Byrd you see now (as far as policy decisions go) bears almost no resemblance to the Robert Byrd he knew back in the 60's.
