It's funny to me that scientists are always asking what purpose this or that feature of a prehistoric creature served. If it evolved by accident wouldn't creatures have all kinds of things that are useless? You'd think we'd have eyeballs on the top of our heads or inside our noses or something crazy like that wouldn't you?

These things fade over time. Hence if the raptor evolved from birds, they would retain feathers well past when they were useful. They probably used their feathers when trying to attract mates, like many birds do now.

Again, the scale is over millions of years.
